"Data," on the other hand, is not a homogenous descriptor. "Big" data, similarly, is either s non-technical intensifier, or it refers to the mathematical simplifications that arise when we are performing statistics on populations rather than samples.
One route to improvement, therefore, would be greater technical clarity: What are we actually talking about that computers do, and why do we want to learn more about it? (I think this is an essay about what you want to learn, rather than what you already know, given both its content and its tone.) Wondering about "free will" does not seem novel, given the last half-thousand years of "Western" thought, so it;'s not clear whether talk of "algorithms" is, like Calvinist predestination and "vulgar Marxism," a cultural expression of a persistent philosophical anxiety or an actual alteration in our psychological condition. I wonder if maybe the answer is not to resist technology but to shape it in ways that align with democratic values and human rights. Even though I know this is hard to obtain in real life. I think it would require much more than just laws. It would call for a societal awareness of the implications of data usage and a proactive stance on regulation. Education and public awareness would be critical—people need to understand how data affects them and be empowered to make informed choices about their privacy and autonomy.
